What is the Body Mass Index (BMI)?
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure that relates your weight to your height to estimate if your weight is within a healthy range. It is a quick and widely used screening tool by health organizations like the WHO. It is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by the square of height in meters (kg/m²).
Interpretation of Results (Adults)
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines the following ranges:
- Under 18.5: Underweight
- 18.5 – 24.9: Normal weight
- 25.0 – 29.9: Overweight
- 30.0 or more: Obesity
Important: BMI is not a perfect measure. It is a useful screening tool, but it does not diagnose body fat or an individual's health. It does not distinguish between fat mass and muscle mass, which means athletes with a lot of muscle mass could appear as "overweight". It also does not consider factors like age, sex, or fat distribution. For a complete health assessment, always consult a medical professional.
