Beyond Weight: Understanding Body Fat
Total weight doesn't tell the whole story about your health and fitness. Body fat percentage is a much more accurate metric, as it distinguishes between fat mass and lean mass (muscles, bones, organs). Unlike BMI, which can classify a muscular person as 'overweight,' this measurement provides a clearer view of your body composition.
The U.S. Navy Method
This method, also known as the body circumference method, is a simple and accessible way to estimate body fat percentage using only a tape measure. The formulas are different for men and women due to differences in body fat distribution.
How to take measurements correctly:
- Height: Measure yourself barefoot, standing upright.
- Neck: Measure the circumference just below the larynx (Adam's apple).
- Waist: Measure the circumference at the navel for men, and at the narrowest part for women.
- Hip (women only): Measure the circumference at the widest part of the hips.
Important Notice: This calculator provides an estimate and should not replace the advice of a healthcare professional. Its greatest utility is not to obtain an absolute number, but to track your progress over time. If the measurements decrease, it is a good indicator that you are losing fat.
