What is a Weighted Average?
Unlike a simple average (where all grades are worth the same), a weighted average assigns a different 'weight' or 'importance' to each value. In academia, this is very common: a final exam might be worth 40% of the grade, while homework is only worth 10%.
How is it calculated?
The formula to calculate the weighted average is as follows:
Average = Σ (Gradeᵢ × Weightᵢ) / Σ (Weightᵢ)
Where 'Σ' means 'summation', 'Gradeᵢ' is each individual grade, and 'Weightᵢ' is the corresponding weight or percentage for that grade.
Practical Example
Imagine you have an 80 on an assignment worth 30% and a 70 on a midterm exam worth another 30%. You have the final exam left, which is worth 40%. With this tool, you can add the grades you already have and then play with the final exam grade to see what you need to score to pass the course or achieve a certain grade.
